Oscar 2007: Afterthoughts
The Winners and Losers
Last Year Winner came in last and out of no where, a dark horse came out and left everyone in the dust ... even before the race was officially over ..
Nope I wasn’t talking about the Oscar Winners or Loser ... I am talking about Oscar Bets that we are had this year!
the Dark Horse (Mei) took off from the first category and by the 4th category, the Sound Editing, none of us could even stay on par with her ... our last hope (for Shaiful and Me) was that we get the Film Editing right and she got it wrong which might give us more hope at the final category where our choice differ again ... but The Departed helped Mei departing from the rest of the group for good.
For the Major categories, there isn't really any upset except for Eddie Murphy who didn't get the Best Supporting Actor award ... which I am pretty glad that because Alan Arkin of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE got it ... Best Original Song was quite a surprise where the 3 Songs from Dreamgirls couldn’t make it in the end.
I was hopping that Little Miss SunShine would win the Best Picture too Since Departed was a Hong Kongrip off remake, The Queen was too British, Letters from Iwo Jima was too Japanese and Babel was too everywhere ... Little Miss SunShine was a testament to the independent spirit of film making and the only film among it's group that really touch me (if I seen it in 2006, I am pretty sure there a place for LMS in my top ten)
While watching the Oscars in the comfort of our own home, Shaiful and I decided to have a few side bets ... One was on Babel not winning any awards which I initially thought the odds was against Shaiful until the final results showed how close I was to losing a movie pass to him ... and thinking back, it's quite a long short for a composer to win back to back (plus amidst all the bad reviews)
The other one was on an upset that I hope will become a long tradition in Oscar and that Clint beating Marty for Best Director again .. which didn't happened (yawn) and Marty finally got his first one (moot point: couldn't have done it without the help of Hong Kong!)
My Prediction
I did rather badly this year ... compared to last year which I got 12 / 19 right .. this year (we open all the category for guessing) and I only got 11 / 24 right

Maybe I wasn't a good host last year so no one want to come to my place ... sigh ... 5 cited work and 1 cited better Oscar coverage with her cable leaving only me and Shaiful who are still on about watching it together ... but in the end, I cancel it because I got a little terror who will be having his routine crying and hogging of TV in the morning
But still it was fun chatting with Shaiful over the MSN while watching the Oscar ... I also realized I spend so much time tabulating the score that I didn't really watch the Oscar but hey, at least it's keeping me awake in the morning

Do you need to possess who you truly love?
My fren just msg me to let me know that he is in pain … heart pain, the pain that we all feel when we are going thru when someone we love left us ... that empty terrible pain that seems to make us unable to breathe and make life seems pointless ... my Uni "Juliet" and I used to term it as a trip to hell which we went thru together once
after advising him a couple of time ... I was getting fed up ... partly because there a couple of guys who only contact me when their partner left them, making me feel very "used" (hey what happen when all fine and dandy ? got look for me or not?) & partly because my advice are not getting thru to him ... and partly, the OSCARs were on !
But still ... i think it's payback time cos I put my friends thru similar suffering before ... aka whining to my friends about the girl who left me ... how I should have treat her better and cry them a river to see ... hmmm lucky my friend who was/is very good to me, stuck with me and listen to me for months .... I really can't imagine what he and my other flatmate went thru because I was a whining baby for months and they were stuck with me for 24 7 ...
thinking back ... it's really sad and i am very ashamed of myself and promise never to do that to my friends again ... some of you might be thinking that I am currently doing it to them now, you are actually getting off better than my ex flatmates ... 24 7 leh .. can u imagine ?
anyway .. back to my this friend who reminded me of my past ... i think i killed his whining with a question that he himself found it hard to answer ...
"Do you need to possess who you truly love? "
I felt that it was a checkmate question ... There no right or wrong answer but it can indicate what you truly want ...
If the answer is yes ... then aren't you treating that person you love as an object to own?
If no is the answer ... then shouldn't you be happy just to know that he or she is doing fine and not force him or her back into a relationship ? (i almost type slavery instead of relationship) and wish him or her all the best ... even if the path that he or she had chosen is a path that you cannot accompany ?
in a way, it can help to answer why is that person so miserable about the ex leaving ... there could be a number of reason why you are hurting over your ex but the most important question here is do you truly love her
if you don’t ... then no point making everyone miserable ... if you do, then learn to be happy for her ...
and as much as I don't like Sting's If you Love Somebody Set Them Free song's tune, the lyrics in it make sense...

Between Yellow & Iris
When life can feel so unloved and lonely ... i received an sms out of the blue from my ex who sort of a long distance buddy now ... she heard Yellow, our song over the radio n sms me with a Valentine Day greetings ... tho it was rather simple, i felt somewhat touch by this simple msg
Initially I thought she got the wrong song or the wrong person cos I remember that it was Iris and it turned out that we have 2 songs ! hehehe Yellow & Iris : ) wah liew ... greedy huh ... we only been together for a couple of months and we got 2 songs !!!
Later that day, when i was doing my last min new year clothes shopping, the department store was playing Iris over the PA system ... sigh it just felt so bittersweet then n there ...
tho i dont know what the future holds for me but hey at least "You'll Know You Were Loved " (another great song by Lou Reed in the first FRIENDS soundtrack) (Change all the You to I )
heheh oh anyone want to know why those were our songs ???

for Iris, it was during a bad patch of our relationship ... there were disapproval and to many who know what we did ... we were like the bad guys ... and the chorus in this song somehow make it felt all right as long as we have each other "and i dont want the world to see me, cos i dont think they will understand, when everything made to be broken, I just want you to know who i am"

I haven't been doing my exercise routine for quite sometime liao and I feel rotten about it ... rotten till it got a bit depressing
or maybe i gotten the blues and halted the routine ? anyway my room is in a mess again (mess created by the new computer when it moved in) and i got no mood to clean them up ... i am veering off the course of goal that i am trying to attain and been chunking on chocolate again ...
maybe it's the weak will power that i got ... which often make me realize that i probably won't make a very good superhero
I swear on the 14th Feb, I will clean my room up n reboot my exercise routine again (which I started my 30mins walk again) ... yeah 14th Feb would be a good day to start since I decided to self exile myself from the lovey dovey public and all media if possible ...
but i often wonder .. what knock me off my course ... partly it's the computer .. i been glued to it ... playing mine sweeper ... yeah sad ... getting a new computer that can process twice my old pc n i am playing mine sweeper .... sigh i should be fragging some virtual creature with it ... but tat me ... big talent small use
another thing got me off course might be what my fren said ... while having late night supper, she said "nah, u r not that fat and u shouldn't be so worry or concern about losing weight. " hmmmm could it be possible ?? someone who is not turn off by my tummy ?? which i am finding very revolting nowadays and cant wait to get rid of ??
now this is a very chio girl who was the object of many guys' affection and when someone like her said that ... it felt like there hope for ugly fat people all around the world to attain what they had always wish for !!! yes there a god !!! life suddenly felt so sweet ... what a relief ... not all chio girls mind fat people !!!
and then she asked me to finish the remaining supper ... pause ... wait a min ... hmmmm was that just a plot to make me finish the food ???
anyway time is running out ... i planned to lose at least 10 kg by my fren's wedding during mid April which seem like mission impossible now (specially i only lost 1kg n afterwhich i slack off)... strangely my fren, the groom had decided not to lose weight while me the MC is desperately trying to lose weight ... yeah I looked very fat in last fren's wedding photos and not going to repeat that mistake again!
it's okie if it doesnt make sense ... its 3am in the morning n i am just rambling

getting cosy with my new pc
yes there been a lack of updates on my blog n i blame my new pc for it ... nothing wrong with it yet (tho i find that it's kinda operating slowly) but it gotto do with the lack of software that i normally use ...
so why am i not installing it ??? cos i am afraid of virus hidding in some of my old softwares so dare not install too many programs yet ... and then i am missing some of the installer ... till now (from 6th feb), i havent even got my MS Office installed yet which is giving me a lot of problem
lots of excuses and i still tihnk something is wrong ... tho double the spec of my old pc ... it's just slightly faster and i still have to wait for quite a few internet pages to load ... even pages like yahoo

tragically charismatic
oh no ... this post n topic is not about me : )
those two words pop up in my mind when I was listening to Robbie Williams' latest album Rubebox ...
and no ... i don't know him that well nor do i follow his "news" that much but from what i gathered and what i imagine ... it's quite sad to be him
just imagine .. a guy (or a rockstar to aid ur imagination ) who most likely could get any girl he fancy but spoiled for choice and maybe as much as he wish, he could not settle down with anyone

Double happines or Double trouble
"be careful what you wish for" ... it's quite true ... recently angry at the lack of options, i wish that i can be the one to choose instead of always being the options ...
and in a day or so ... it seems that the wish been granted and i am at a crossroad to choose which path to take
and it's hard to choose ... both paths have their obstacles and advantages ... now why does it feel like a curse than wish come true ??
in the end, i chose not to choose ... yes there always another option in life that's often not revealed (cheem right ??) ... going down either one of these two paths might not be right for me
or maybe the options were never mine to start with ?

My Name is Fame got the Nods !!!
Yup this straight to video (or should I say VCD) in Singapore has a very special place in my heart ... it's my number 2 movie of 2006 and one that made me go teary up 3 times ... the story's nothing new n as my fren Stefan noted, the story was pretty much like the recent Korean film "Innocent Steps" but the way it tackled about the HK filming industry just nudge itself firming into my heart.Specially Lau Qing Yun who had never won any major acting awards (citing John's review at moviexclusive). The dark guy with the acting chops but lacks the good look to stay as popular as he was when Xin Bu Liao Qing's time. The character he played and his real life were almost an exact copy and knowing that, it just made it heart wrenching for me to see his struggle in an industry that favors looks more than abilities. Also loved the underlying message that no matter how good you are, you need to put in hard work and never quit to achieve success.
I know his chance won't be that great but after watching this movie (which ended with him at the HK FILM AWARD), I secretly wished he could get a nod for the upcoming HK Film award and I even went to check out the HK Film award website to see if was My Name is Fame was overlooked ...
Imagine my happyness when I saw the nomination out today at monkeypeaches! he got the Nod for Best Actor, YU On-On for Best Supporting Actress and HUO Siyan for the Best New Performer ... the odds of them winning are not that great but hey won't it be an amazing feat if one (or three) dark horse(s) emerged from this little film that a lot of people didn't see in the cinema ?
keeping my fingers cross and hey if it came true ... u read it here first
6 Feb ! it's coming !!!
just got a call from Richland : ) my "free" desktop with upgrades will be available for collection on the 6 Feb 07 from 9 to 5! strangely ... I am getting it a few days before my fren who purchased the PC before me : )
but quite excited to see what my new baby can do ... cos I promise my fren (the same guy who is collecting after me) that I will be doing his wedding montage for him : )

Dangers of Turn Left on Red!
I langga a cyclist today n it's freaking scary
Was driving off my "younger brother" place and upon reaching the junction beside his flat, when I was about to make my turn at the junction where u can turn left on red, I heard a "tub" song at the front right side ...
that split second I jam brakes and was shock to see a cyclist (out of nowhere)leaning on my car ...
the first thing that came into my mind was "die ah ... I hit a cyclist"
then the next thing that happened was just surreal ... The cyclist helped himself off my car and cycle away .. Didn't "swear" at me or "apologize" at all ... it's like a very normal day to day occurrences to him ...
immediately I turn to check the traffic lights and was sure that it was red for pedestrian crossing so actually I had the right of way. I believe he thought that I was going to stop cos it was red lights for me too but he missed out the "turn left on red" sign
but still .. I was quite stunned after the whole incident ... I was actually looking at his direction for on coming vehicles but I didn't notice him at all ... it was bloody dangerous ... and I didn't check whether was it green light for pedestrian crossing too .... so kinda heng that the lights were in my favor and heng he didn't get knock down or fly onto the path of the oncoming traffic ...
so readers .. If u drive or a pedestrian .. Take note of traffic at the Turn left on Red junction ... Don't take things for granted
