Same Old Excuses

Before we continue on with this post ... please bear in mind that I am getting old and the problem with old age is that the brain engine starts to slow down (not that it's fast to start with in the first place).

Two days ago (or was it three) ... I suddenly remember that one of my best platonic female friends would be having her birthday on the 28th. So I mentally told myself that I would like to either give her a call or send her a sms on her birthday.

Smart readers would automatically pick up that when the plan is being spelt out, it only meant it didn't went according to plan.

I gotten a SMS this evening ... right after the Black Friday episode and still in a zombified mode that "I had been demoted from my dear friend's list of friends" for forgetting to wish her a Happy Birthday for the second time in a row !

I know that in her heart, I rank quite highly on that list : (

After reading that, I was in a slightly amused but mostly panic mode ... I just couldn't believe that I had forgotten something that I told myself to remember just a couple of days ago ... in the moment of desperation, I came up with something good and told her that I will make it up to her by getting her a extra goodie Christmas Present next month

I thought it was a pretty good attempt to get back into her good books

4 hours later ... she sent a sms. It seems that I gave the same promise last year and failed to live it up then ... (kinda sound like the story of my life) ...

I was equally impressed and embarrassed that I came up with the same great idea twice !! hahaha but I mentally told myself that I will prove her wrong this time round!!!

Dear Readers ... any suggestion what to give this pretty petite great friend of mine who went through a couple of my most difficult times in my life ??? of cos the one who come up with the best suggestion will get a equally good prez for Xmas

Yup ... been Black Friday-ed

I am too tired to type anymore ... just a random mini purchase turn into a maniac hunt cum grab with my Dvd buying partner ... there's no end to greed and we keep adding dvds to our cart that our souls scream stopppppppp

but bloody hell ... 168 dollars for 19 dvds ! that's like less than 10 sing bucks for a US R1 Dvd!

Thought it would be the bulk of this batch order as most of the items here are available but strangely, only 1 dvd in this batch got shipped. DDD should lump their shipping together if that will reduce the international shipping cost !

Finally the majority of the black friday bulk ... while checking the items that were shipped, I was shocked that they only shipped a copy of Stranger than Fiction when my excel list indicate 2 copies ... went to Deepdiscount website to check and realized it was partially shipped ... first time I see such a term on order detail ... normally they would just shipped all the quantity of a title instead of just half of it ... : ) anyway its's shipped

The Motherload sequel !! the Box Spawns !! yeah ... yesterday was one big chunk of dvds and today it came in many boxes !! at first I thought there wasn't going to be any items coming in as the postman actually delivered some letters to my place ... but gotten a big surprise when later in the afternoon, while looking after Andrew, door bell rang and a postman with a big bag of boxes !!! maichaim like Santa!!! hahaha

was watching Ch62 before I sleep and heard Sammi Cheng sang this song in Summer Love (that beach movie with Richie Ren)

Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) - Kuai Le Bu Kuai Le (快 乐 不 快 乐 )

It's not the first time I heard this song ... Used to have a mp3 of this song but haven't really really listen to this song for a long long time ... and somehow at this early morning, Sammi became prettier and this song became more affecting.

I wonder if all relationship will end up this way ... from happiness to blandness and staying together for the sake of staying together or breaking up ...

who is Expendable?

It's not new news that Sylvester Stallone teaming up with Jason Statham and Jet Li for this movie call Expendable.

Basically The movie is about a team of Expendable mercenaries on a mission ..

What got me excited is that it's Sly the man mention at The Transporter 3 red carpet that they are close to getting Dolph "He-man / the original Punisher" Lundgren into the act as well !! it's become the B Grade Movie of the century! Now if they get Chuck Norris and / or Van Damme in ... it's will automatically be a Must Watch for me

I haven't been so enthralled by a Rat for a long long time and this fearless one got my heart when he refused to be program to fear. Drew pictures of Cat on his notebook : ) Just imagine if your kid drew a picture of Obama Osama on his notebook

I used to be a fan of WWF (before it became WWE but all the same, it's the Wrestling World) but given out after the sub par acting and increasingly numbers of unknown wrestlers got to me ... when I heard Darren Aronofsky and Mickey Rourke will be doing a movie about Wrestling, I kept my Radar tune to any news about this one ... Watching the trailer had just confirm it's Must Watch Status on my list.


The Last one was a disappointment and seeing that this one is made for 3D effects, I am not having high hopes for this one either but this trailer with Scat, his acorn and a female counterpart was just too heartbreakingly funny (Trailer D): )

My Monkey Jug went for the Wall-e audition ? She was shortlisted for that one and only plant role (yes it was a supporting role but still a substantial one)... but they turned her down because she was too side way

and they will looking for a more upright plant to play the role ... sigh

If the main computer, "AUTO" of the human spaceship needed to follow the classified file which states that humans should not return to Earth, then what's the point of sending Eve for a plant seeking mission when the Human captain wasn't even aware of such Mission / Objective?

Kinda inefficient and contradicting isn't it?

Even if the Captain is aware of such mission (which I could have missed out), wouldn't it be more efficient for "AUTO" to bluff the captain that Eve had "went" on the mission instead? Since the Captain needs the "AUTO" to do everything for him and the spaceship ?

and the "holo-detector", the machine that the plant need to be place in so that the spaceship would return back to Earth ... if "AUTO" is in control of the spaceship, why couldn't he just off the "holo-detector"?

Of cos I know if what I asked is worked into the film ... we would most likely be stuck with Wall-e on earth for the whole duration of the movie ... but it just feel that the whole chase around was a bit done for extending the screen time sake ...

don't get me wrong ... I still like this film and what it stands for ... I'm a fat guy too (just in case you didn't know)

Coming back from HK, I was so happy to see my Monkey Jug's new sprout opening it's leaf ... jia you ah monkey !

The Blunder @ the airport

Never in my life had I encounter this and for something so dramatic ... it gotto be my Mom's handiwork.

We just clear custom and I went to help get some duty free stuff for my friend. She started questioning me who is it for, why am I getting it and etc ... So I shoo her away... tell her to make her way to the Belt area first as she tend to walk rather slow ... (back in Hong Kong, I felt that the local snails there can crawl faster than her but thought it might be rather mean to tell her and we might end up sending more money on taxi ... hehehe), I would catch up asap ...

Then I kanna a overly helpful cashier who helped the customer in front to change her stuff to something else better ... she even wanted to help me change my stuff too but it turned out to be not what I wanted ... a lot of time wasted there n then

Rushing to the baggage belt, I was surprise to see that she actually move all our luggages onto a trolley .... kinda impressed that she did it on her own (not that our luggages are that heavy anyway) ... she asked me to do a count of the items and they were right ... so we rush out of the final custom area ... partly because I was carrying a lot of dvds and didn't want to kanna checked + divert to MDA to purchase unncessary stickers

partly (actually mostly) ... my Mom can't wait to hug her grandson

true enough ... that little bugger actually jump and hug my Mom ... ( that points scoring young punk is a threat to my inhertiance ) .... it was so drama and done in front of a big crowd that I quickly push the trolley away ... didn't want to block the enterance too ...

so while waiting for them to have their dramatic reunion, I tried to restack the bags and our posters as some items are more fragile than the others ...while restacking, I realized something ...

One of the bags don't belong to us !!! > My Mom took the WRONG BAG !!!

Tah ta da DAHHHHH ...

The important lesson I learnt from that night was that even after coming out of the Airport custom ... you can make your way back. It's just that it's a bit troublesome and far to actually re enter the belt area ...

You have to actually go to the airport crew entrance, change a passport for a pass to re enter ... and then take the wrong bag for X-Ray!

I wonder what if the wrong bag belongs to a drug trafficker or bomb terrorist? Won't I be in a big unnecessary trouble to re enter in that way? Of cos the police that was escorting me chose to ignore my questions (I was still in the mood to ask such unlikely scenario since this unexpected event already occurred) ...

Reaching back to the belt area ... I wonder if I should just place the wrong bag down with the other bags that had already been taken off from the belt or should I try to attempt to look for the owner ... Lucky I didn't have to think about it for too long and Lucky the owner turned out to be a young lady ... attempted to apologize to her but she didn't respond at all ... and her male companion was giving me the eye and mumbling some unpleasant stuff ... felt rather wronged but what can I do ??? (hint to readers ... feel free to console me via the Comments Button)

This is something I never personally encounter before (even tho the airport police told me its a frequent occurrence) ... to be so blur until take the wrong bag felt really remarkable ... But like I told our German supplier who told us that his wallet been pick pocketed before ... such unexpected occurrence (be it abit troublesome) would be a great conversation piece in the future.

HK Dvds Harvest

Finally gone to HK and done the dvds shopping on my own ... it turned to be much more difficult than I expected.

a few shops that I had known during my previous visit had either closed down or move to else where. the information that I got from a local forum was rather disappointing as the shops turned out to be smaller and not as well packed as I thought it would be. then lastly, I didn't had that much time to shop around n check out the price.

anyway ... on the last night and day, I still managed to find some shops and some decent discount over what the online sellers are selling. I can't help but feel that I had over purchased dvds.

Gotten 14 dvds and spend close to 200 bucks

It started with a Visit to Hong Kong Records as I was seeking for the Sparrow OST CD ... I found one at HMV but I got a feeling it might be cheaper elsewhere and the only other CD shops that I could visit in that span of time was Hong Kong Records.


Managed to find one that is about 6 dollars cheaper there but still rather expensive compared to any of the dvds I had gotten in this trip

at Hong Kong Records, I managed to find more older / unpopular titles that I couldn't find in other dvd / vcds shops (beside HMV).


First up, these 3 for HK$99 ... I gotten Double Tap before but there is a problem with playback and I wanted to get one that is problem free ... but it turned out that the same problem with playback occurs ... I am a bit wary of dvds from Universe as there another title that has problem playing and ironically, the other two from this set are also from ... Yes Universe ... Initially playback and testing, Viva Erotica and Future Cops had no problem ... haiz, I don't it won't become a problem eventually ...

Had Plenty of Fun watching Viva Erotica and Future Cops. It was an unexpected surprise and might review them later on if I got the time.


then were other titles like I'll Call You, The Dragon from Russia and It had to be You which were slight cheaper here. There a funny way that the Dvd shops in HK rack their HK movies and it's according to the Stars that's in the movie. Such as Ekin Cheng n Karen Lam for It had to be you, The Hui Brothers for The Dragon from Russia & Andy Lau for I'll Call You at Widesight shops (even tho he only cameo in this one). At least HK records placed this under actual male lead.

There were also the joy of finding unexpected discount by digging thru their dvd rack (in that limited time span). For It had to be You, the dvd under Ekin Cheng was priced at the normal price while Karena Lam's one offered a 20 dollars discount from that normal price. I was already ready to buy the normal price version so the extra discount came as a unexpected joy.

Then it was off to HMV ... normally the more expensive place to get stuff but hey, this time round, they are cheaper than the smaller stores n online sellers. They are having some Christmas sale and I gotten some in a rather low price (which I hope I won't discover that I was wrong ... specially I'm rather anti HMV's pricing)

First up, it was there 3 for $149 promotion. Saw it as a great chance to get Hooked on You at less than S$10. Wanted to get the original Ashes of Time dvd too as I suspect I won't like the redux version of this film ... I know it's a not so good version of this film but got one just in case that the future version only have the new redux versions ... then I will at least have a can of pineapple copy of dvd that won't expire (unless touchwood ... dvd rot or machine obsolete strikes) ... a piece of memory if you will.

The funny thing was that when i was at Causeway Bay HMV, they had Ashes of Time & "Hero" as part of this promotion but when I reached back at Kowloon, they were without the stickers. Had to ask the counter people and after some checking with their computer, it turned out some folks at that branch didn't do his or her job.... kinda "lucky" that I asked

Then it's a blind buy for Breaking News (to get the 3 items special price)... I was so tempted to get another "Hero" dvd because Yesasia which replaced a faulty dvd with one that got a damaged cover ... and I guess you should know how anal I am when it comes to things like that. But I control a bit, decided to cut down my duplicate purchases and went for something new ... since it's from Johnnie To, I think it's unlikely that I will be disappointed by this ... hopefully

Another 2 more from HMV which was surprisingly cheaper than the smaller stores. The remastered version of Chungking Express and Running on Karma. Not sure why but it's more expensive outside. Running on Karma cost about 100 HK$ but here, only sell about HK$69 ... which is about S$14. I just hope that Singapore Laser Fair won't sell it for 9 bucks ... which is what I gotten for one of Andy Lau's movie.

Chungking Express which will be getting a Criterion release soon (if not already out). As a casual movie watcher ... I feel that this version will be enough to satisfy my "wants" ... maybe in time to come, I will get both copies ... so can compare compare a bit

Before I could start my departure from Hong Kong, I went to the Cheapy stores to grab what I noticed during my initial scout around for price. The first major thing that I noticed that Re-cycle Director Edition cost only HK$59! that about S$12! Last time, I drool over hearing people getting this edition at abt S$20 and I got mine at about S$ 24 ... Kinda greedy, I got this at the low price and hope I am able to find someone who likes this movie as much as me to let off ...

Also grab You Shoot I Shoot and Sparrow before I go go. Not much discount for You Shoot I shoot but I put it off long enough and since i could save on the shipping + I could inspect the quality of the cover, I decided to get it now ... Sparrow was relatively cheap but I suspect the price will drop more in a year or two .. but since i gotten the OST, so what the heck... the only nagging thought is that it's from Universe imprints.

That about it. ... should be going thru the dvds to check it's playable or not ... but it's kinda pointless as even it's faulty, I won't be able to change them ... unless someone going to HK and offer to do it for me.

Some stuff that I noticed during my dvds shopping in HK ...

firstly, the range of HK Dvds are really small compared to the Hollywood ones ... the way they stacked their local dvds at the back and in rather dismay conditions were a sad sight... latest Hollywood movies like Wall-e and other Japanese/ Korean / Foreign movies get the prime spots and it just so sad that We Asians don't love our own stuff that much

Then there were stores that I used to frequent that had disappeared and stores that forum mention couldn't be located or was disappointing in actual size... maybe the sales of movies in dvd/vcd formats are declining and no longer that popular ... specially in the Internet age where everything is so easily located online?

Lastly, someone mention in a forum before that the Hong Kong citizen favours the Vcd formats more than the Dvd formats ... with the latter format deemed as only snobs would collect. Visiting the Hong Kong Stores, it really felt that way ... Vcds are placed at the front and Dvds often at the back ... a strange sight as in Singapore, we could hardly find Vcds anymore ... could it be that the Hong Kong people prefer price over quality?

Walking on Orchard Rd, I came across one of the many new Shopping Center that's being constructed to make Orchard RD a truly "shopping paradise" ... I can't help but wonder

while this one ... looked like a scene from Die Hard or James Bond flick ... actually happened at my flat's lobby

my neighbour smashed his alfa romeo thru my lobby wall that separates the car park from lobby ... he said he was reversing and step on the accelerator by mistake ... which i find it hard to believe ...

New Sprout

For the longest of time, there isn't any new sprout coming out of my monkey jug ... got me worried for a while ... thought my monkey jug stopped growing ...

DDD having an extra 5% off this time round to entice those who are having the recession blues... but I also noticed some of the titles I shortlisted are being marked up more than it's previous Jun / Jul sale ... so technically this extra 5% off is a bit BS
