I can't understand why

Cannot understand why people call this a pretentious movie... it's stuff that dreams are made of ... it made me wonder ... why ppl are making it an issue that Tim Roth is the only star ... he is good

Love this movie so much that I am going to hunt the 1st installment down : )

The movie got it right at the start ... when it show how We Men can live without our heart but we cant live without our dick : )

Comedy, Nudity and Violence look so good together in Crank High Voltage ... does to the action genre what Saw did for the horror genre ... Hope there will be a 3rd Crank

Kallang Roar again

big heart for a Singapore independent film... personally Kallang Roar reminded me what it is to love your country and reinstill the sense of pride in one country that I haven't felt a long time.

Christopher Nolan nails it again with the Dark Knight. Christian Bale's Batman, Heath Ledger's Joker, Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent & Gary Oldman's Gordon all added an unique dimension to their character. The rest of the cast were great too and this is by far the most compelling, tragic and absorbing film about Batman ever. It felt that TDK packed with too much at first and had to fast forward thru too many events but when it hit the mid section, everything just gel and was pure gold from then on.

Review
One of the most anticipated Korean Movie of 2008. Although I have yet to watch this movie, the soundtracks from the trailers had been an earworm since day 1. I also love the director's previous film A Bittersweet Life and it's soundtrack so I am betting that it's going to be just as geat.

This movie made me go teary up and laugh until peng. Kinda regret not going for the actor press conference in Singapore and missing this movie when it was out in Cinema cos it made me missed the chance of buying this "special" limited edition which come with bamboo tray (that normally use for dim sum)

Daisy Limited Edition

Review: The Pan Asian flick that got Andrew Lau, famous for Infernal Affair to cross over to Korea to work with 3 of the hottest stars in Korea. the End result was rather average flick but I heard that the limited edition which features the director cut and this cut with changes in editing made the whole film so much better, so i am quite interested to see how much better it became.

Prom night? more like a slumber party

Was invited to view Prom Night, a movie that almost didn't make it to our local cinema and was going straight to video ... anyway it was bad .. so bad that it actually gave slasher movie a bad name. The suspense were all gone right from the start when they reveal who the killer and his motive.

anyway I went to imdb and was reading the "250 Things We Learned From 'Prom Night'" topic and some were spot on !

1. When your mom is being violently stabbed, hide under a bed and just stare at her.

4. If you want to escape from a maximum security prison... just go through the vents.

Hellboy 2 rocks

Not as eventful as the Dark Knight but this comic book based movie scores high points in my book with it's character driven theme. Loved the mix mesh with religion, spooky and mythical creatures while touching on certain prevalent issues that happening in our world. A combination that only Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola could bring onto screen.

the 2008 Summer Blockbusters Recap so far

It's the end of June and done about half of the Hollywood Summer Blockbusters so far ... Here a recap of those that I managed to catch ...

By far, the Best Flick among the Summer BlockBusters flick of 2008 and a current contender of my top ten 2008. Robert owns the role of Tony Stark and he is pretty much the reason to watch IronMan.

I see no point in bringing this Japanese anime which was polluted with the English dubbing for the American back in the old days ... the storytelling is so choppy, the actions get so boringly similar after a while, the special effect felt like a big step backward (specially coming from folks who made the Matrix) and somehow it's so old school that it's hard to relate to it anymore

Indy latest installments suffers from editing woes which was a jarring distraction specially when it came to action sequences ...my other friends noted that there were too many show off with CGI and tho it didnt affect me that much, there isn't really any factor in this Indy to get Wow with. A bit pointless installments to milk the fans of the original trilogy (hey the same can be said about Star Wars 1 2 3)

Surprisingly more enjoyable than I expect ... plenty of laughs and as a parody of Kungfu, somehow it felt that this Panda got the essence of old school kungfu fighting and invokes memories of old Jackie Chan Kungfu Flicks ... where he played the martial arts wanna be ... but sadly his role here won't be that memorable

Actually Makes me Miss what Ang Lee was attempting to do with the Hulk ... that not to say that Ang Lee achieved what he was trying for in Hulk but let's say that there more effort in fishing out the conflict within one self and the father son woe than this mindless Hulk Smash flick ... gave it a slightly better than passable grade for how Betty Rose stops the Hulk. the slap slap emotion practice, the too excited before sex, the Stan Lee appearance, (spoiler starts) the Leader origin (spoiler ends) and the tie in to Avengers !

Old School Fun! Steve Carell & Anne Hathaway's on screen chemistry was one of the major reason for liking this ... plus it brought back plenty of memories of the TV series ... would love to watch this again

What went wrong with Wanted? At first I thought it was above average flick but after chatting with a friend about this style over substance, I started to find more and more faults with it. The change in Wesley from a loser to a wannabe and finally a determined dude was far from compelling or convincing. The twist was so predictable.

Some spoilers content that I felt Dumb or uninspired were
1) the rats at the finale!!! how did they get around so fast? was the Fraternity headquarter so unguarded that rats could find their way around so quickly? and why did the Fraternity stop shooting at Wesley once he released the rats?

2) the train scene ! the moment Cross caught Wesley ... didn't feel so Star Wars? "I'm your dad"

3) the final shootout at the Fraternity library ... didn't Wesley just told the other members that Sloan just made used of the fortune telling weaving instruments to his bidding (and to avoid his own death)? so when Sloan told the members that they are also on the death list, why weren't they bright enough to question that Sloan might be lying / manipulate the fortune telling cloth again? but then again, it happens in real life, people never question the "instruction" that they been dealt with and follow blindly with faith

as light as a sparrow

It’s a poignant, yet subtle love story set among pickpockets and an enigmatic damsel in distress; blended with a hybrid cross of oriental tunes with fluffy jazzy musical while adding a distinct certain cinematic noir element to it. It’s not easy to juggle so many elements but Director Johnnie To, his actors and his collaborators had skillfully snitched all these pieces together to deliver a simple but memorable story.

HandCock "way too much" trailer

Mr Fan once send me a link to a review that reviewed the movie based on the trailer. It's a disturbing trend cos the review was quite spot on. It's either movies nowadays are so similarly structured or the trailer reviewed too much that there's hardly any surprise anymore ...

Caught the HanCock's latest trailer at Yahoo Movies (which doesn't load as well as youtube and it's quicktime gives me trouble that Apple Trailers never did before, so not exactly my fave place to view trailers ... but anyway back to wat I was about to say .... ) and the trailer review keep popping in my head ... I think I am able to tell what's going to happen in HandCock ... at least 3/4 of the way and I can guess what's going to happen in the end

So might contain Spoilish content below which I am Guessing from the Trailer

Will Smith's Hancock starts as an irresponsible Superhero who don't care how much damage he cause while trying to do good. It got up till a point where Jason Bateman, a PR man and likely a friend, to show him the problems in his action. He probably had a change of heart (with involvement of Charlize Theron cos you don't put a big name in this movie and don't let her do anything that get involves with the change in the lead character) but it's too late as the courts decided to jail him for the damages that he had caused.

In Jail, crime rate rises and soon, he will need to be released and this reformed superhero with the PR help of Jason Bateman will soon gain the public approval once again.

Of cos cannot just end in this manner. For the little blink and you'll miss revelation in this trailer, I bet there will be another character with super power and this super villain's revelation or power gaining will take place through out the movie, with little bits littered everywhere. And I'm betting it will be power like Storm or Telekinetic sort of power. Should end in a happy ending but with HanCock going thru one of the "hardest fight" of his life and the city is likely to underwent major destruction which Hancock will help to repair with his superpower.

It might be non chronological but otherwise, it essentially the same. I think I'll be skipping this but folks who read this blog n either plannign to watch this or die die has to catch every single movies one, please let me know how far am I off the mark.

Iron Man Rocks

Iron Man joins X-Men, Spider-Man (the first two and not the last one) & Batman (The Nolan Reboot)as the Best Superhero Comics brought onto the big screen and like those other movies, it deserves a sequel of their own, specially if Director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr are on board.

I have seen craps like Ghost Rider & Daredevil, both directed by a "supposedly comic fan" director who took all the "good stuff" from those characters's long tenure in comics and yet still managed to whip out a piece of crappy movie. Director Jon Favreau on the other hand, took a second rate superhero (IMHO) and made him distinctive and interestingly likable. Mainly because he picked the right actor, Robert Downey Jr for the role of Tony Stark (the man behind the Iron Man suit) and the effort to tell the slow build up / construction of Iron Man.

Of cos there are some plot holes in this flick (even Batman Begins had quite a few too) but then again, overall, this flick managed to capture the essence of Iron Man's history and made it enjoyable with it's energetic computer generated special effects, the minor references that will make fanboys drool and the potential it can achieve in it's following sequels.

Without a Doubt, Iron Man is a strong contender for my Top Ten of 2008 .... If only Iron Man comics are as good as this movie.

My Current Top 10 Movies of 2008

I know it's early but back on the last day of 2007, when I was supposed to list my top ten movies and do a mini write up for MX, I didn't get to finish it due to poor time management or my laziness to write a mini essay on why it's my top ten.

In order not to repeat the same mistake and let my dear Editor down again(who incidentally, does not post his own top ten up) this year, I planned to do it as soon as I gotten ten movies that I feel are good enough to get a four stars rating and above. As this year proceed on, I might encounter some other better flicks and will then choose to knock some off from the list (of cos subject to my whimsical ratings)

식객 (Le Grand Chief)

This movie demonstrate Beauty in Simplicity and the ability to contain so many subplots that are both meaningful and constructive to the main storyline. Bunch of lovable cast from the lead hero to villain, to the babe and the various supporting roles made it more endearing to follow and root for the change of events that unfold.

Technically, I didn't bothered to watch this in the cinema and only managed to catch this on Dvd recently. Afterwhich, I been kicking myself for missing out on this movie tour in Singapore and the Special Limited Bamboo Set that had sold out in most online retail shops.

3:10 to Yuma

Love the unlawful arena in the commencement of civilisation and laws in the old USA. In this dusty setting, we got 2 wonderful actors representing the upright goodness of mankind and tempting evil of sins. During the exciting and morale dilemma of these two leads, we get to see that goodness comes with his own secret burden and the bad guy .... well just don't believe what the rumours and lawman says about him. Wonderful entry to a dying genre of movies.

The Mist

For giving those Christians fanatics the finger! Just kidding although I Know that it had offended many of those Christians that some even gave it a biased review.

For me, I find that It's not what's in the Mist that scary ... it's how people react to the unknown that's truly scary. A wonderful example how people could be manipulated in times of uncertainly and how religion could be twisted in guise of human's corrupted intention. The Mist has great drama tension and suspense all over it. One of the greatest adaptation of Stephen King's work by Frank Darabont. Highly Recommended!

Le Scaphandre et le papillon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly)


In the same vein as The Sea Inside, a moving peek into the life of a person who is locked in his own body. The agony, the helplessness and the warmth of those caring family & friends around are all heartfelt here. An inspiring tale to both those able bodies and disabled to make the best out of life.

Juno

For making Unwed Teenage pregnancy look n feel so cool! Juno got the best ensemble of memorable quirky characters since Little Miss Sunshine and the subtle teenage romance arc in this movie was a few notches better than other Hollywood Romance movies that I had seen recently.

Touching, Funny, Charming and utterly Honest. One of the best that I seen in 2008

두 얼굴의 여친 (2 Faces of My Girlfriend)

Although this movie does suspiciously feel like a My Sassy Girl ripoff remake copy inspired plot, I was first won over the comedic elements and then conquered by the subtle take on romance. The beautiful underlying message here is that in romance, it could be just a split personality that is involved and when the love ends, it akin to the end of that dimension in us. Once love has been lost, it will never find it's way back. Could be a bit cheem but in many ways, it just hit the nail on it's head.

ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:序 Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

Few reasons why this remake movie version is better than the original Evangelion anime series. 1 - Re-editing was magical, making it more streamline and to the point. 2 - the re animated Picture look more impressively vibrant and 3 - this story need to be seen and heard in a big screen format with good sound system. Can't wait for the other 3 sequels that going to retell this complex popular anime tale in whole (and hopefully less confusing manner)

Semi-Pro

One of my favourite movie this year that gotten a lot of negative vibes from others. I liked it because although it's formulaic, it was able to demonstrate a lot of heart in this movie and show some love for the old basketball. It could also be that I just seen another Basketball movie by a Singaporean, shot in China and hated it so much that any decent movie about Basketball will easily swept me away. Might be a moot point and I would like to watch this again to see if there still that much love for it ... or it might be the first flick to be on the chopping board for the top ten category.

三國之見龍卸甲(Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon)

Another flick that I been told was overrated. As again, I am aware of it's weakness (that is too choppy and fast forwarded first half) but the overwhelming points that I like about this flick made me decide to give it a 4 stars. Partly I been playing chess when I saw this film and I appreciated the sacrificial strategy that this movie is trying to show. It also ponder on whether are we really the master of our own destiny or just pawns in other people's plan. Andy Lau also provided the regal feel to the Zhao Zhilong character in midst of the messy editing and storytelling. Lastly, as a war movie, it shows just how absurd war could be, something we could relate to in this modern age of ours.

Run Fat Boy Run

Personally a film that I been waiting for (for months) and with a plot that I was able to relate to. A fat boy who lost his love through his own devices, tried to run the marathon in a desperate bid to win his love back. Of course this film is packed with the same old routine for this genre of film (the underdogs genre) and comes a feel good fairy tale ending (which the cynic in me was screaming "ya right") but then again, it was able to swept me away in the midst of laughing and feel good factors. Plus it was successful in bringing out the "long feeling" of the marathon during the segment of the movie that made it even easier to root for that much needed chirpy ending.

There are actually two other films that were quite good but never gotten the chance for theatrical release in Singapore yet so won't be listing them down.

and the surprise test screening was ...

this marks the second time that i won tix to a Owen Wilson's movie (the first one being You Me and Durpee)

the funny thing was that we didn't know what we are watching until the movie title came up ... haiz ... was quite disappointed that it's not Son of Rambo and was scratching my head wondering why is this film being tested ...

another thing that I noticed was that Both Mr Fan & I were the oldest folks around ... the cinema was flooded with teens which this movie is targeted at ... I think we were the control subject ... if we didn't like it ... it just prove their theory right that it's for young folks ... but then again, i didn't like it that much compared to Mr Fan ...

My Mini Review

Unnecessary rehash of Superbad that wasn't that memorable at all. It's the same old growing up / facing your bully (obstacle) movie from Hollywood which is getting stale. Although Owen Wilson is less annoying in this compared to his performance in Me, You and Durpee, his performance here is not worth paying money to watch. The funny thing is that the show actually was more interesting and funny when he is not in it.

and the Surprise Screening was ...

Singapore Dreaming!Yup the recent sold out Gala film at Singapore International Film Fest.

We were quite surprise to see Colin Goh and his wife there when we were collecting our tickets. I was wondering if Colin Goh and his wife were like us, taking part in a contest held by UIP and watching the Mystery movie like us (and maybe wishing it was going to be MI3 too)

When Richard Low (the mediacorp artist who starred in I Not Stupid and Singapore Dreaming) appeared with his kaki, we started suspecting that it might be Singapore Dreaming instead and once we received the survey forms prior entering the cinema, Stefan told us it's a confirm case as the survey asked about the knowledge of Singapore Dreaming.

And I have to say that it was uniquely bagus! It was funny, it was depressing real and most important of all, it had characters and situation that most Singaporean could relate or identify with. One of the best Singapore Films I seen so far and easily an entry for my Top Ten films for 2006. Singapore Dreaming comes highly recommended by me! It should be receiving general release this coming August and do give this local film a chance.

Short Take : it Sux

the Plot : Dying girl don on evil wig and stop dying but become evil and wreck havoc to her sister and her sister's bf's lives

The Verdict : After Ringu (the Ring Japanese Version), we are blessed with the constant pouring of horrible horror movies which are becoming desperate and taking whatever items they can in to make a horror movie. Ref: One Missed Call - Handphone, The Wishing Stairs - Staircase and the upcoming Cello - of cos a Cello that Kills. Kinda remind me of the good old days of The Killer Tomatoes.

During the movie, a idea came to me. I thought how about doing a horror movie call “The Cinema” where people dies after watching lousy horror flicks? I posted it at MX forum and a friend who watched this movie too work on it and gave a one-paragraph setup, which I thought was quite good.

But I seriously wonder, what going thru the producers and director’s mind when this idea was pitch to them? Mind U, there a Special Collector DVD out there where the Director and other members behind this movie production that actually came together and present on their work.

Maybe they are like me, who think “The Cinema” was a cool idea, they thought that their "The Wig" was great too. ~I am not being sarcastic, I really like "The Cinema" ! ~

the Virgin & the Dead Bride

2 Good Movies that I watch recently

First off: The 40-year-old Virgin that will be opening this coming week (6th Oct 2005). Just as funny as the American Pie and the Wedding Crasher, there will be plenty of moments to laugh your head off. One of the Best Comedies of 2005!

And then the Tim Burton's Corpse Bride: Some folks complained it was too short or they were expecting more. But I thought it was just nice. The Movie could have done more to build up the characters but I felt that it would just be dragging down the pace. Anyway I was blown away by the Excellent Animation and Characters designs and watch out for "the Dead Lives again" spoof. For me, it was the classic Tim Burton & Johnny Depp's magic on screen.

darn, was reading Some Movie News at Yahoo and came across some news on JOdie Foster's upcoming movie Flightplan.

Wait till you’re older (Andy Lau’s New Movie!)

~Nutshell plot~ Boy (Kong) hate that his dad for causing mom’s death and moving him into a new home with a step-mom. Kong vowed to leave home asap and cant wait to grow up. Like movies such as "Big" and "13 going on 30", little boy gets his wish and become a grown man over night.

Had very low expectation for this and during the early part of this movie, I was counting the number of films that it’s ripping off. "Matrix" and "Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate events" was 2 prominent ones that I caught.

But as the story goes on, everything seems to gel together. Especially the ending, which wasn’t the formulaic routine finale that I had predicted and it made the whole "sudden", growing up more meaningful.

Another factor that kept my interest going was why was a genuinely nice Step-Mom (Karen Mok) who had tried to put up with Kong’s constant tantrum, ended up as a home wrecker (that Kong constantly accused her of). The revelation came suddenly and rather surprising for me. The resolution of it was done well enough and emotional enough to bring tears to some (I witness it!).

The subplots such as Kong (Andy)’s crush on his teacher Miss Lee and his good friend Da Xiong’s family (who shared dinner over the internet because the mom is staying in rural area) didn’t really have a proper closure. That was scene where the older Kong asked if Da Xiong’s dad ever cheated and was given a nudge by his good friend. It seems like there was something more to it but nothing came out from it.

And Miss Lee falling for the older version of Kong was rather unbelievable. There wasn’t enough time to build any creditable romance between them and Miss Lee’s character comes across to me like a potential psychopath. This is one very weird relationship.

Anyway veterans like Karen Mok, Felix Wong and Andy Lau made it fun to watch this movie and compared to the recent HK movie, "The Myth", "Wait till you’re older" will be more worth it to catch it in Cinema.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I just saw this 66’ western classic and it blew my socks off! Plot in a nutshell: 3 gunslingers looking for $200,000 worth of gold coins (it must worth a lot back then). And the personas of these 3 gunslingers are represented by (duh) the good, bad and ugly (who I don’t think was that ugly after all).

Anyway long story short:

The Good: Clint Eastwood ~ super duper cool, he don’t talk much and when he does, it almost classic every time he open his mouth. He defined the standard what cool should be! Got to be one of Clint’s best performance ever.

The Bad: Lee Van Cleef ~ right from the start, u know his the “evil guy who will do anything and all thing terrible one” and yet that there this charm emitting from him that it’s hard to hate his character. I think the director once said his eyes can burn a hole thru the screen and I can’t agree more with that.

The Ugly: Eli Wallach ~ the clown : ) this film would not be such a pleasure without this clumsy character. One moment you could wish that someone kill rotten bugger and another moment you could be laughing at this character’s antics that you just want to hug him.

The story slowly unfolds over 2 hours and 40 mins (160 mins) but with their intriguing characters and unexpected events thrown at them, I wish “The End” would not come so soon. Will be getting the extended version to watch the 181 mins version. This Movie is just pure cinematic gold.

Recommend for those who never watch it before or not even interested in western cowboy movies: ) try n u might fall for it like I did

Jackie Chan's The Myth

Jackie Chan plays Jack, an archeologist who having dreams of possibly his past life as a General and a relationship with a Korean Princess that was going to be the Emperor’s new concubine. As His scientist friend invited him for some investigations in India, his dreams became seemly real and of course our hero would like to get to the bottom of all this mystical possibilities.

Long Story Short:

Story: Lousy tale of mystical proportion.

Action: sequence was the normal JC stuff with some new "scenes"

Actress: Mallika Sherawat was the only good thing going for this movie but sigh, her role was short and unnecessary

Verdict: can give it a miss unless you are a true blue Jackie Chan fan
